Sustainability is a major theme of the European Football Championship. The German Environmental Aid sees a need for improvement.
The German Environmental Aid (DUH) believes that there is a need to catch up on environmental protection during the European Football Championship. “If the European Championship is to be the most sustainable of all time, then we need to step it up a notch,” said DUH Federal Director Barbara Metz to the “Rheinische Post”. Among other things, she stated that there is still no reusable system for food in stadiums and “no car bans on match days near the stadium”. In addition, there is no ban on short-haul flights for teams and officials.
“Merchandising with short-lived disposable products is also not sustainable. From an environmental point of view, not everything is going smoothly at the European Championships,” said Metz. The impact on the environment is immense, and the reduction of pollution is only partially successful.
The European Football Union UEFA presented a comprehensive sustainability strategy before the tournament. The vision is to become “the reference in terms of sustainability of events for the world of sport and a driving force for sustainable development of German and European society,” the strategy paper said.
