50,000 spectators created a party atmosphere in the evening sun in Hamburg before the preliminary round match of the European Football Championship between Turkey and the Czech Republic. The Turkish fans in particular were as vocal as they had been in previous games.
Card record for Türkiye vs Czech Republic
Referee Istvan Kovacs had a lot to do in Turkey’s 2:1 win against the Czech Republic. He showed yellow cards 18 times and red cards twice – never before have so many cards been handed out in a match at a European Football Championship. “It was a close, rough and physical game,” said coach Vincenzo Montella, commenting on the success of his Turkish national team. “We can’t change it now,” he added.
The fans of the winning team didn’t seem to care about the flood of cards. What mattered to them was the victory and the entry into the round of 16 of the tournament. “Bir, iki, üc – Türkiye” (in English: “One, two, three – Turkey”) rang out through the streets. We have put together impressions of the victory euphoria from Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey in the photo gallery above.
