Wimbledon: Lisicki believes in Kerber coup at Wimbledon

Angelique Kerber’s game is a perfect fit for Wimbledon. A colleague knows this from personal experience.

Sabine Lisicki believes her compatriot Angelique Kerber can pull off a surprise at the tennis classic in Wimbledon. “She looks fantastic. She is in top shape. And if you have already won a tournament, then anything is possible,” Lisicki told the German Press Agency before the start of the third Grand Slam tournament. Kerber triumphed at Wimbledon in 2018. This Friday, she will find out who she will be competing against first at the draw.

After the birth of her daughter Liana, the former world number one returned to the tour at the turn of the year and has been fighting to join the extended world elite ever since. The 36-year-old was knocked out in the first round at both the Australian Open and the French Open. She was also eliminated after the first game at the Wimbledon preparation tournaments in Berlin and Bad Homburg. Kerber has fallen to 221st place in the world rankings.

“After a long break, you just need a few months. But Angie is playing better every week,” said Lisicki, who lost in the 2013 Wimbledon final to Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli.

“Why not Angie?”

Lisicki is currently taking a break due to her pregnancy. The 34-year-old will be rooting for her teammate Kerber all the more. “Some player always causes a surprise at the Grand Slams. Why not Angie? She has so much experience on grass and she will fight until she drops,” predicted Lisicki. In Lisicki’s opinion, Kerber’s style of play is a perfect fit for the fast, slippery tennis surface. “Angie loves to counterattack. She plays incredibly flat balls and moves brilliantly,” praised Lisicki, who once had to experience Kerber’s skills on grass up close. In 2012, Lisicki lost the quarterfinals of Wimbledon to her compatriot after a tough fight.
