Tennis: Siegemund announces in Wimbledon: Olympic doubles with Kerber

Tennis player Laura Siegemund announces at Wimbledon who she will play doubles with at the Summer Games in Paris. She doesn’t like the fact that the mixed doubles constellation has not yet been decided.

According to Laura Siegemund, former world number one Angelique Kerber will be chasing medals in the doubles at the Olympic tennis competition in Paris this summer with the Swabian. Siegemund said this after reaching the second round at Wimbledon. “I spoke to Angie on the phone and she said she would like to play with me,” said the Metzinger (36). “She wants to play doubles when she really has a chance of winning a medal and can really do something. And then that was the best option for me.”

The Olympic tennis competition will take place from July 27 to August 4. Kerber, who won silver in the singles at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, has already been officially nominated for the Olympic squad, just like Siegemund. Kerber (36) from Kiel will also compete in the singles at the Stade Roland Garros.

Siegemund dissatisfied with open mixed question

The decision on the German mixed pairing will be made at short notice. Tokyo Olympic champion Alexander Zverev said at Wimbledon that he does not consider participating in the mixed competition with Kerber to be an option at the moment because they would not be able to make it into the competition due to their ranking positions. Whether he will compete in doubles or mixed in addition to the singles depends on whether a second doubles team can be formed without him.

“I really hope that he decides to play mixed doubles because I would be really keen to play with him,” Siegemund reiterated. The two formed a successful pairing at the United Cup in Australia earlier this year.

She had told the German Tennis Association “very clearly” that she would not understand if she was not allowed to play the mixed doubles. “Because I think I deserve it, simply with the performances I showed at the United Cup and now in Paris,” said the French Open mixed doubles winner. “Nobody can say that my current form is not right.” If Zverev does not play, Tim Pütz would be the candidate.

Siegemund expressed her dissatisfaction that the situation had not yet been clarified. “I like to know where I stand and in this case I don’t know,” she said. “I was only told that I would most likely play the mixed doubles on the women’s side. I would have liked to have had 100 percent confirmation of that.”
