The European Championship match between Turkey and Austria was supposed to be broadcast exclusively on Magenta TV. However, there were problems registering due to the high level of interest, so the provider showed the match for free on YouTube.
The European Championship round of 16 match between Turkey and Austria was available to watch online on Tuesday evening without any access restrictions. The match is MagentaTV’s exclusive game, and originally a paid registration with Telekom’s streaming service was necessary. However, due to a large number of new registrations for the match, there were waiting times, as reactions on social media show. The provider decided to offer the alternative solution.
“The response to our exclusive Austria-Turkey round of 16 match is overwhelming and far exceeds our expectations,” said MagentaTV. “That’s why we are also showing the match in our digital waiting room so that our customers don’t miss a second of the game while booking MagentaTV. This also had the effect that even more interested parties visited our booking platform. The basis for the stream in the waiting room is YouTube.”

Exclusivity had caused criticism
The fact that the match was not shown on free TV, i.e. neither on the public broadcasters ARD and ZDF nor on RTL, had caused criticism before the game. There are around three million people of Turkish origin living in Germany.
The background: MagentaTV is allowed to exclusively show a round of 16 match at the European Championships. The broadcasters do not comment on who was allowed to choose a match from which position. ZDF chose the match between the German national team and Denmark. When it was its turn, the paid streaming service Magenta chose the match between the Turks and the Austrians.
