In the French Auvergne, sprint king Mark Cavendish takes his long-awaited 35th stage victory – and in doing so surpasses a legend.
Sprint king Mark Cavendish has finally surpassed the legend Eddy Merckx in the 111th Tour de France and crowned himself the sole record winner with his 35th stage win. On the fifth stage, Cavendish stormed to victory and showed his class at the age of 39. “King Cav” defeated Jasper Philipsen and Alexander Kristoff in a mass sprint after the 177.4 kilometers between Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and Saint-Vulbas. The Germans Phil Bauhaus and Pascal Ackermann came away empty-handed.
As expected, nothing changed at the top of the overall ranking. After his climbing show the day before, Tadej Pogacar, who is wearing the yellow jersey, is still 45 seconds ahead of Belgian Remco Evenepoel and 50 seconds ahead of defending champion Jonas Vingegaard.
On Thursday, it’s the sprinters’ turn again. On the sixth stage, the professionals will cover 163.5 kilometers from Macon to Dijon. The easy, flat stage offers few major hurdles. In the end, there will probably be a mass sprint in the final 800 meters before the finish.
