EURO 2024: Romania expresses its heartfelt thanks to German hosts

Romania’s place at the 2024 European Championship ended in the round of 16 against the Netherlands. Afterwards, the team proved to be a good loser – and especially a good guest.

Of course, the Romanians were disappointed after being knocked out of the round of 16 of the 2024 European Football Championship against the Netherlands on Tuesday. Nevertheless, it was a great success for the team to have made it that far. And so they left the stadium with their heads held high – and Germany as the host nation. But not without saying a proper goodbye.

They left a message in their dressing room at the Munich Arena, which UEFA published on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday.

Euro 2024: Romanians thank host Germany

In it, the national team thanks their hosts for making them feel at home. “The European Championship was one of the most important football experiences in our history and we are happy that it was Germany that provided the stage for it.” The team is leaving Germany knowing “that we gave everything for Romania and are grateful for everything we experienced here.”

Romania surprisingly finished the group phase first in Group E, leaving fellow favourites Belgium behind, and beat Ukraine 3-0 in their first game. They then drew and lost. Coach Edward Iordănescu’s team was uncharacteristically offensive for an outsider, and in the round of 16 against the Netherlands the team did not give up despite being clearly inferior and held up better than the Dutch team’s 3-0 win would suggest. Two of the Dutch goals were scored in the final stages.

The Romanians set up camp in Würzburg during the European Championships. “Thank you for the great games and for bringing so much European Championship atmosphere to the city,” the city wrote on its website.
