Markus Babbel played for FC Bayern Munich in the late 1990s. Real Madrid said they were interested in him.
Markus Babbel has confirmed Real Madrid’s previous interest in him. The former international told a funny anecdote.
Babbel, who participated in the test match between Mainz 05 and Liverpool FC ServusTV Acting as an expert, he said he was sitting in the car to the airport. That was 21 years ago. At that time he was a few hours away from his signature with Liverpool FC.
Babbel: Real Madrid? For me only England was an option
In the car, Babbel then learned of the rumor that he should be standing at Real Madrid immediately before signing that the change was as good as fixed. “That was well researched,” said Babbel in his role as a TV expert 21 years later and laughed at the report from then.
But then he put it into perspective: “Real Madrid really wanted me. But it was clear to me: If I move, then only to England. That was always my big dream.”
Babbel decided to move from Bayern to Liverpool in the summer of 2000. With the Reds, the future coach won, among other things, the FA Cup and twice the league cup. Babbel played 73 competitive games for Liverpool. “That was the right decision,” he says of the move today.
