For a long time, German fans were wary of Toni Kroos. On Friday he may play his last game – against Spain, where he has long been enjoying the appreciation that he did not receive at home.
It is said of Toni Kroos that he is the metronome of the German game, that he sets the pace. But that is not true, because his influence is by no means limited to the ninety minutes of a football match. Kroos sets the rhythm for entire days. And the joy he takes in doing so was evident on Wednesday afternoon in Herzogenaurach.
His appearance was planned for 1:15 p.m. in the DFB press conference room, but Kroos didn’t arrive until 1:30 p.m., strolling along, one hand in his trouser pocket, the other holding a smartphone that he was looking at. A smile played around his lips, he must have received some good news, and Kroos sat down on the podium, satisfied.
