Second Bundesliga: Steffen Baumgart meets his old love

The DFL has announced the match schedule for the Second Bundesliga. Fans can look forward to a duel between two traditional teams right from the start.

Even before the full schedule was published, the German Football League announced the two opening matches of the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga. The first matchday in the 2nd Bundesliga starts with a real cracker: Relegated Cologne will face long-standing second division team Hamburger SV. For Steffen Baumgart, now coach of HSV, 1. FC Cologne is a well-known club. He coached the team from the Rhine in the last Bundesliga season.

The fans of both relegated first division teams can look forward to the first match day, as their teams will begin with a home game. In addition to Cologne, Darmstadt will be able to try to collect their first points for the table on home turf against Düsseldorf.

For the first time since 2017, the Schalke team around Karel Geraerts will be allowed to open the season in the Veltins Arena. The traditional club from the Ruhr region will have to prove itself on the first match day against Eintracht from Braunschweig.

Second Bundesliga: How the promoted teams start the season

Two of the three promoted teams have to start away. Jahn from Regensburg will play in the Heinz von Heiden Arena in Hanover, while the players from Preußen Münster will be allowed to break in their shoes in Fürth.

The reigning third division champions Ulm begin with a home game against last season’s cup semi-finalists from Kaiserslautern.

The exact schedule of the games for the first two match days in the 2nd Bundesliga will follow in the second week of July. Match days 3 to 7 will then be scheduled in the third week of July.
