Mark Cavendish has left Eddy Merckx behind with his 35th Tour stage win. The Belgian cycling legend is impressed and congratulates the Briton.

Cycling icon Eddy Merckx has congratulated Mark Cavendish on setting the record for most stage wins in the Tour de France. “Congratulations, Mark Cavendish, on this historic achievement! Such a good guy for beating my record,” the 79-year-old wrote on Instagram.

The 39-year-old former world champion Cavendish won the fifth stage of the 111th Tour on Wednesday in Saint-Vulbas and thus completed his historic mission: With his 35th stage win, the Briton surpassed Merckx and is now the sole record holder.

Merckx celebrated 34 stage victories in the Tour de France during his career. Among other things, he won the Tour five times between 1969 and 1974, took the overall victory in the Giro d’Italia five times and was world champion three times.
