World champion Rainer Bonhof talks about the night in Malente, the most important cross of his career – and the sentence from his wife that brought him back down to earth.
Mr. Bonhof, Sunday marks the 50th anniversary of the German footballers’ 1974 World Cup victory. How will you celebrate?
We players are meeting in a place near Munich. I won’t say where exactly. It should be private, without press, without cameras. We decided that at Franz Beckenbauer’s memorial service.
The quarter-finals of the European Championship are also taking place this weekend. On Friday, Germany will play against Spain. Will you be in the stadium?
No, I’m more of a grill person. I prefer eating sausages, drinking beer and watching football to sitting in the stands. If our boys make it to the semi-finals, I’ll think about it again.
