Lando Norris follows up on his first place in the first practice session. He also drove the fastest lap in the afternoon. Max Verstappen is clearly behind.
Lando Norris got in the mood for his Formula 1 home race by setting the fastest time in the second free practice session. The 24-year-old English driver from McLaren dominated the race after the row in Spielberg with world champion Max Verstappen and his early exit from the British Grand Prix.
Norris followed up his best time in the first practice session and also finished first in the second one-hour session. He relegated his team-mate Oscar Piastri to second place by 0.331 seconds. The Australian had previously finished third.
Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Pérez from Mexico finished third in the afternoon. Nico Hülkenberg followed in fourth place. The 36-year-old Rhinelander and the only regular German driver in the Haas pushed himself ahead of Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari (5th/Monaco) and Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes (6th).
The 39-year-old British record world champion has been waiting for his next – his 104th – Grand Prix victory for over 940 days. He has already won his home race in Silverstone eight times and took pole seven times. Verstappen followed behind Hamilton in seventh place.
The three-time world champion leads the standings with 81 points ahead of Norris. Qualifying takes place this Saturday (4 p.m. CET/Sky and RTL), and the race starts on Sunday at 4 p.m. CET (Sky).
