Carlos Alcaraz is keeping his chances alive at Wimbledon. Things didn’t look good for the defending champion for a long time. In the women’s competition, Emma Raducanu is on a roll.
Last year’s champion Carlos Alcaraz has averted a bitter disappointment at Wimbledon. The Spanish tennis star defeated the American Frances Tiafoe in five sets 5:7, 6:2, 4:6, 7:6 (7:2), 6:2 at the grass tournament in London and thus avoided being eliminated in the third round.
On Centre Court, with the roof closed, Alcaraz showed a disappointing performance at times and had to make up a set deficit twice. After 3 hours and 50 minutes, the 21-year-old still prevailed and is now in the round of 16.
Alcaraz maintains chance of defending title
This means that his second triumph at Wimbledon remains possible. A year ago, Alcaraz impressed with his final victory over Serbian record Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic.
World number one Jannik Sinner would be a possible semi-final opponent. The Italian Australian Open champion had no problems two days after his hard-fought victory against compatriot Matteo Berrettini. Sinner beat Miomir Kecmanovic from Serbia 6:1, 6:4, 6:2.
The reunion between Alcaraz and Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev could only come in the final of the most famous grass tournament in the world. Almost four weeks ago, the two faced each other in the final of the French Open. Zverev missed out on his long-awaited first Grand Slam title in the five-set defeat.
Raducanu remembers 2021
In the women’s competition, two US Open winners made it to the round of 16. Emma Raducanu brought back memories of her winning streak in New York with her clear 6:2, 6:3 win over the Greek top-ten player Maria Sakkari. The British sensational winner of the 2021 US Open can now count on good chances of reaching the quarterfinals against the New Zealand outsider Lulu Sun.
American Coco Gauff moved into the round of the best 16 with a 6:4, 6:0 win against British outsider Sonay Kartal. She will face Emma Navarro in an American duel.
