The German team loses after a great fight against Spain – but can still feel like a winner at the European Championship: The country is behind them again.
One more minute, just one more minute, that might have saved the day. 1:1 after extra time, the penalty shootout so close – and if there’s one thing the Germans can do, it’s take penalties. The French, Argentinians, Italians can attest to that, and the English of course, and have done so for decades.
But the opponent on Friday evening was Spain, nicknamed “la furia roja”. And they did not allow themselves to be forced into the stupid duel of goalie versus goalkeeper; they decided the game playfully in the 119th minute with a header from Mikel Merino into the top left corner.
It was the minute that would put an end to a special game for the Germans.
