European Football Championship: Neuer and Müller: No decision yet on DFB future

Two former world champions talk about their future in the national team after their European Championship exit. Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller do not want to make a spontaneous decision. There will be talks with the national coach.

Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller have not yet announced a decision about their future in the national football team after the European Championship exit against Spain. “I said I’ll think about it after the tournament, it’s not today or tomorrow. It could take half a year or longer,” said goalkeeper Neuer (38) after the 1:2 defeat after extra time in the quarter-finals in Stuttgart. The home tournament was the eighth major event in a row for the Munich goalkeeper as Germany’s number one. He played his 124th international match against Spain.

Fellow World Champion Müller came on as a substitute against Spain for his 131st DFB appearance. The 34-year-old stressed that he would never announce his retirement as a national player, but said clearly: “Realistically, it could well be that this was my last international match. I will discuss things with the national coach.”

Nagelsmann announces talks

After the Spain match, Nagelsmann had already announced personnel changes for the next international matches in September against Hungary and the Netherlands – without naming names. “We already have a squad that is not extremely young. We will think carefully about what is right for the Nations League,” said the national coach. He will hold talks with players.

The conversation with Müller could take place this weekend, the Bayern professional himself noted. “Perhaps the coach and I will find that it makes more sense,” he said about ending his DFB career after more than 14 years. He has a good relationship with the national coach.
