Yes, Germany is out, and yes, the country is in mourning. But one day, people will be glad they were able to watch this game. Because in its unbridledness lay everything that makes football fantastic.
Sometimes football is a paradox. That is what makes it so tragic and so wonderful. It contains contradictions that are impossible to resolve. And it creates feelings that shouldn’t actually exist at the same time. Anyone who watches, lives and loves football knows about its ability. And yet it is always forgotten.
A feeling of simultaneity that would remain after this quarter-final between Germany and Spain, as a question, not an answer: How can you feel so empty and yet so full? So sad about a defeat, but also happy to have seen the game of games that preceded it?
These images will remain. Still lifes of horror.
