Daniel Carvajal and Robin Le Normand will be missing from the Spanish team’s European Championship semi-final against France. And what about the injured playmaker Pedri?
Spain’s national football coach Luis de la Fuente will have to do without the suspended regular players Daniel Carvajal and Robin Le Normand as well as the injured Pedri in the European Championship semi-final against France.
“We want to remain optimistic about Pedri,” said the 63-year-old coach after the 2-1 victory in the quarter-final clash against Germany in Stuttgart. He trusts his squad and sees no problem for the semi-final match on Tuesday in Munich: “Everyone here is ready to play at a very high level.”
Real Madrid’s full-back Carvajal was shown a second yellow card, while Real Sociedad San Sebastián’s centre-back Le Normand received his second warning. Pedri had already been substituted in the 8th minute after Toni Kroos fouled the FC Barcelona playmaker. According to the association, he suffered a sprain in his left knee.
Outstanding Olmo
Substitute Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig scored the opening goal for the Spaniards (51st minute) and, after Florian Wirtz had equalised, set up Mikel Merino’s 2-1 goal for the Furia Roja shortly before the end of extra time. Olmo was also named best player of the match.
“It was a great game, a very complicated, a very difficult game,” said the 26-year-old attacker. “To beat Germany, we had to play a fantastic game.” He was impressed by his team’s attitude over 120 minutes: “I think that’s the way to go. We have to keep going like this.”
De la Fuente repeated several times at the press conference how proud he was of his team. “I definitely experienced a historic moment today. I think it is the first time that we have managed five wins in a row and beat a home team in a tournament.” He is “completely convinced” that he can go very far with the team. The Spanish team can become European champions for the fourth time after 1964, 2008 and 2012, surpassing the German selection, which also has three titles.
