The biggest surprise of the first week of the All England Tennis Championships in Wimbledon happened on Saturday evening in the women’s competition under closed roof: The top seeded Pole Iga Swiatek lost to the Kazakhstani Julia Putintseva in the third round after 1 hour 59 minutes with 6:3, 1:6, 2:6. For Swiatek, Wimbledon is not a love affair: last year’s quarter-final remains her best result after five attempts.
Swiatek had gone into the match with a series of 21 victories and had won the titles on clay in Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros. The first set went just as the Pole wanted, but then the outsider, with a lot of power and support from the crowd, managed two breaks in the second and third sets. “I don’t know how I managed it. I just concentrated on my fast game. I have no words and I’m so happy.” In the round of 16 she will now face the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko.
