Basketball world champion Franz Wagner has extended his long-term contract in Orlando. With his new contract, he will suddenly become the highest-paid German professional athlete.
The long-term contract extension of basketball world champion Franz Wagner with the Orlando Magic has been finalized. The club from the North American professional league NBA announced this without giving any details about the new contract. The sums that the 22-year-old Berliner will receive in the future had already been leaked via ESPN and “The Athletic”. Wagner is expected to receive a sum of at least 224 million dollars (around 206 million euros) for the five-year contract period.
This makes Wagner the highest-paid German professional athlete of all time. His annual salary is over 40 million euros. Ideally, the winger could earn up to 270 million dollars (around 249 million euros) over the long term – that would be more than NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki earned in his entire career.
With the signed contract, Wagner can now also play for the national team. This was not possible on Saturday in the clear 66:90 defeat against France due to insurance issues.
“It’s a surreal feeling. I haven’t really got it myself yet,” said Wagner in Cologne. His brother Moritz Wagner also extended his contract with the team from Florida. “I’m very happy for him. It’s a nice contract, he absolutely deserves it,” said national coach Gordon Herbert. Along with captain Dennis Schröder, Franz Wagner is considered the star of the national team, which is aiming for a medal at the Olympics.
