European Football Championship: Le Pen criticises Mbappé: “The French are fed up”

France’s most famous sportsman has a clear political opinion, which he also publicly represents at the European Championships. The right-wing nationalist Rassemblement National does not like that at all.

Marine Le Pen of the Rassemblement National (RN) criticizes France’s football superstar Kylian Mbappé for his public calls to prevent an election victory for the right-wing nationalist party.

“The French are fed up of being lectured and advised on how to vote,” the 55-year-old former RN leader told CNN: “Mbappé does not represent French people with a migrant background, because there are many more of them who live on the minimum wage and cannot afford housing or heating than people like Mr. Mbappé.”

The World Cup top scorer spoke clearly about the political situation in his home country during the European Championship, where France will face Spain in the semi-finals on Tuesday (9 p.m./ZDF and MagentaTV) in Munich. “It’s a tricky situation. We must not allow our country to fall into the hands of these people,” said the 25-year-old. “I hope that the result will change and that people will vote for the right parties.”

The right-wing nationalists hope to win an absolute majority in the decisive round of parliamentary elections this Sunday and to provide the prime minister. In the first round of voting, as in the European elections, they were ahead, followed by the new left-wing alliance and the centrist camp of President Emmanuel Macron in third place.
