Olympic preparation: Strong comeback: German basketball players defeat France

Two days after the 24-point defeat, Germany’s basketball players appear to have recovered well. The Wagners are already there, and two more world champions are expected to follow soon.

The German national basketball team has improved significantly in the second Olympic test and achieved a surprising victory. Dennis Schröder and Co. defeated Olympic host France 70:65 (39:39) in Montpellier and thus quickly made amends in sporting terms two days after a 66:90 defeat in front of their home crowd.

Captain Schröder, who was constantly whistled and booed, was one of the key players with 17 points in front of around 10,000 spectators in the Sud-de-France Arena. Unlike in the first match, the Wagner brothers Franz and Moritz were also there this time. The younger Franz, who signed a five-year contract with the Orlando Magic worth a total of more than 200 million euros, scored 17 points. Maodo Lo contributed 16 points in the exciting match.

Theis, Thiemann and Wembanyama are missing

Just three weeks before the start of the Olympic basketball tournament with a preliminary round in Lille and a final round in Paris, the team of national coach Gordon Herbert appeared to have improved considerably. After a weak first quarter with only eleven points of their own, Germany picked up the pace in the second quarter and managed to equalize just before the break. After the break, the game went back and forth – with the guests having the advantage.

Herbert was able to field the Wagners again after insurance problems, but for this reason he had to do without Daniel Theis again. The 32-year-old is said to have already reached an agreement with the New Orleans Pelicans and could soon be on the court. Johannes Thiemann was absent due to injury.

On the French side, NBA super talent Victor Wembanyama, who had excelled in Cologne, was absent due to illness. On Saturday (7.30 p.m./Magentasport) Germany will play its third warm-up game against the Netherlands in Hamburg. There will be another duel between France and Germany in the Olympic preliminary round.
