Alexander Zverev’s knee injury at the grass court classic in Wimbledon may be worse after all. A visit to the doctor in his adopted home should provide clarity – including about his participation in the Olympics.
After his Wimbledon exit, Alexander Zverev wants to undergo another examination on Wednesday to find out whether he has sustained a serious injury just a few weeks before the Olympic Games. His brother Mischa is not currently ruling out the possibility that his participation in the Games in Paris, which open on July 26, could also be at risk.
During a visit to the doctor in London, around 40 millimeters of fluid and blood were taken from the injured left knee. There is now suspicion that something more serious is wrong, Mischa Zverev reported to streaming provider Prime. His younger brother will visit another doctor in his adopted home of Monaco on Wednesday, then there should be more detailed images of the knee that Alexander Zverev injured last Saturday in a fall during his third-round victory.
“If it is a fracture in the bone or a hairline crack or whatever, then we have to see how long it takes. But then the Olympics are in danger,” explained Mischa Zverev.
Alexander Zverev was visibly shaken on Monday after leading 2-0 in sets against the American Taylor Fritz, but was knocked out in the round of 16. In the previous round, when he slipped on the grass against the Briton Cameron Norrie and overstretched his knee, he suffered a bone edema and a strain in the capsule, explained the 27-year-old Olympic champion from Tokyo. “My knee is relatively swollen. But it’s nothing that is exceptionally bad or that will keep me out for a long time,” said Zverev afterwards.
