A video from Dortmund has made a German police officer famous on social media. It shows English fans celebrating the officer – because he looks a lot like an English football hero.
The English national team is in the final of the European Championship after its 2-1 victory against the Netherlands in Dortmund. Before that, the Three Lions’ supporters had got themselves in the mood with lots of beer in the Dortmund city center – and celebrated a German police officer with loud chants. This is shown in a video on X, which was probably published by an English supporter.
The reason for the tribute: The policeman bears a strong resemblance to the English national coach Gareth Southgate. The fans sing the chorus from the song “Whole again” by the band Atomic Kitten. The lines are: “Looking back on when we first met, I cannot escape and I cannot forget, Southgate, you’re the one, you still turn me on, Football’s coming home again.”
The policeman finds the scene unpleasant
The police officer is visibly uncomfortable with being the centre of attention. A colleague can be seen in the background, who, however, appears to be enjoying himself and is also filming the scene with a mobile phone. “No wonder England won’t win anything if Southgate has to work as a German police officer,” commented one X user. “He actually looks like his twin brother,” wrote another.
“Can he please replace Gareth tonight?” asked another football fan, who was not very impressed with the performances of the English team so far in the tournament. Until the 2:1 win against the Netherlands on Wednesday evening, the tournament favorite had not shown its full potential in any of its games and had been particularly disappointing in attack. In the final on Sunday, the English will face Spain. Apart from minor incidents, the European Championship in Germany has so far been spared fan violence or major riots. The Federal Ministry of the Interior has also drawn a positive preliminary assessment of security.
