Bastian Schweinsteiger is supposed to comment on the European Football Championship as an expert. However, at times he would rather be with the players on the pitch. This has now led to a strange TV scene.
As captain, Bastian Schweinsteiger led the German national football team to the World Cup title in 2014, but his appearances as a TV expert on ARD are not quite as confident. The 39-year-old has already delivered one or two strange moments during the current European Championship. One scene that stands out in the memory is the one during the preliminary round match between Switzerland and Germany, when he spoke into a coffee cup instead of his microphone. Before the Netherlands versus England match, another funny moment occurred. What happened?
After a recorded report, the focus switched back to Schweinsteiger and Alexander Bommes – but the ARD presenter was suddenly standing alone on the sidelines. Schweinsteiger could only be seen from behind, first greeting the Dutch player Matthijs de Ligt and then having a long conversation with star defender Daley Blind. Schweinsteiger and Blind played together for two years at Manchester United – they know and respect each other.
Meanwhile, Bommes tried to play down the situation with humor. “I’ve lost my expert, but that’s completely fine. Let’s carry on alone,” he said, looking in Schweinsteiger’s direction. But Schweinsteiger was so engrossed in the conversation that he didn’t even notice that he was back on live air. “Yeah, otherwise I would have asked Basti whether Spain is the best team. I’ll just ask him,” commented Bommes, and then tried a strange theatrical piece.
Alexander Bommes “plays” Bastian Schweinsteiger
He changed sides and imitated Schweinsteiger in a disguised voice: “Yes, well, the Spanish are definitely a top team. The way they played against the Germans was very impressive – especially with the wingers.” Bommes then asked the question: “Do you think the Spanish also ended Thomas Müller’s career?” He answered that too as the fictional Schweinsteiger himself: “Yes, I can imagine that.”
The role play lasted about 35 seconds until the “real” Schweinsteiger finally appeared in front of the camera again. “Ahhh, there you are again! I’m playing you. I’ve just answered the question for you.” Schweinsteiger apologized for the mistake with a grin.
Later, in a conversation with Bommes, he revealed that he hadn’t even recognized singer Adele, who was watching the English game as a fan in the stadium. After all, she had changed so much. Even though Bastian Schweinsteiger divides the football world as a TV expert, he may have made one or two people smile with these little anecdotes and appearances. His next appearance is next Sunday: at the European Championship final.
