After his knee injury at the French Open, there were doubts about Novak Djokovic’s participation in Wimbledon. Now he is once again taking part in the final day.
Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has described his appearance in the final at Wimbledon as “surreal”. The 37-year-old had knee surgery just over five weeks ago. “I don’t want to prove people wrong,” Djokovic said in response to a question on the subject: “I was really focused on making Wimbledon possible for me this year.”
He said he was not reckless and did not act against the advice of the doctors. “I never forced anything,” said the seven-time Wimbledon champion, but rather he followed every recommended step in rehab: “I even did more than that.”
Knee surgery not until early June
Djokovic suffered a torn meniscus in the round of 16 of the French Open and had to forego his quarter-final in Paris. He had an operation on his knee at the beginning of June. Now the 24-time Grand Slam tournament winner has made it into his tenth Wimbledon final with a three-set win in the semi-final against the Italian Lorenzo Musetti.
On Sunday, the former world number one will play in a repeat of last year’s final against Spanish defending champion Carlos Alcaraz for the title at the world’s most important grass court tournament.
A few days before the start of the tournament, Djokovic had left his start in London open. In the first rounds, he had not yet thought about the title, Djokovic said.
“I was just thinking about moving well, not injuring myself, to be honest, and feeling more free in my movements, so to speak,” explained the record Grand Slam tournament winner. From the third and especially the fourth round, he noticed that he was close to his top form and could have a chance at the title.
