Uruguay beat Canada in a dramatic penalty shootout and climbed onto the Copa America podium

Uruguay won on penalties 4-3 Canadaafter the 2-2 in regulation time, and took third place in the America Cupin a match played tonight in the city of Charlotte.

The Argentine team Marcelo Bielsaone of the best in the competition, had to play this round after the 1-0 defeat against Colombia.

In the second half, with ten minutes left, Canada managed to turn the game around with a goal from Jonathan David. At full speed, Koné started a counterattack reaching the edge of the area where he fired a shot that goalkeeper Sergio Rochet cleared, leaving a short rebound that David captured to score the 2-1.

However, the Uruguayans did not sit back and went for the equaliser, which they achieved in the 48th minute thanks to a goal from Luis Suárez. On the right, Giorgian de Arrascaeta made a pass to José María Giménez who overflowed and passed to the middle for the Inter Miami forward who finished with a first-time shot to tie the match and take it to penalties.

From the penalty spot, David was the one who started the shootout and scored the first for Canada, just as Valverde did the same for Uruguay. In the second shot, Bombito scored for Marsch’s team while Bentancur equalised for the ‘Celeste’.

In the third shot, Rochet saved the weak penalty taken by Koné and de Arrascaeta gave the Uruguayans the lead with his goal.

Choiniere equalised for Canada but Suarez put Uruguay back in front and won the shootout after Alphonse Davies failed to score and hit the crossbar.

After 20 years, Uruguay won the bronze medal again in this competition, its eighth in history.

Canada, for its part, had a formidable performance in its first participation in the Copa América and took a historic fourth place.
