Basketball: DBB team at the Olympic opening: Don’t overdo it

The Olympics are getting closer and closer. The basketball players want to go to the opening – one day before their opening match against Japan. Is that wise?

The basketball players have to travel just over 200 kilometers to the Olympic opening ceremony in Paris – no obstacle for Germany’s basketball players. The world champions definitely want to be there, even if the opening match against Japan is scheduled for the next day. “We have decided as a team that we are going,” announced captain Dennis Schröder after the 95:50 test match against the Dutch in Hamburg. Is that wise? The former Braunschweig player says: “We know, of course, that we have a game the day after. And that everyone behaves professionally, gets their sleep, gets their treatment…” The 30-year-old Brooklyn Nets professional, who has long been a millionaire, says: “I don’t think any money in the world can buy that. It’s an experience that you just have to take with you.” Less than 24 hours after the opening ceremony, the Olympic co-favorites will play their first group game against Japan (July 27, 1:30 p.m.) at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Villeneuve-d’Ascq in the Lille metropolitan region. In Group B, Brazil awaits on July 30 and Olympic host France on August 2. There was one win and one loss against the French in preparation.

Does Schröder also carry the German flag?

In preparation for the Olympics, they will play against the Japanese in Berlin on Friday. “We’ve now been given two days off because we’ve worked hard as a team for 14 days. Today was another good game, but we still need to get better,” said Schröder. The best scorer against the Netherlands in front of 10,713 spectators was Andreas Obst, who scored 18 points on his 28th birthday. Daniel Theis scored 16 points on his comeback. Captain Schröder scored 13 points. Schröder would love to lead the German Olympic team as flag bearer – a duel with Alexander Zverev is looming. The tennis pro has made his ambitions known, just like Schröder. The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) will soon make a shortlist and propose three men and three women each. After that, both fans and the German Olympic athletes can vote on which female and male athletes will be allowed to carry the flag in Paris.
