European Championship final: Spain beats England 2-1 and is European champion

Spain is the European football champion. The national team coached by Luis de la Fuente defeated England 2-1 (0-0) in the final. In Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, Nico Williams scored the goals for the Furia Roja in the 47th minute and Mikel Oyarzabal (86th). Spain has thus secured the title in the continental competition for the fourth time and is now at the top of the winners’ list ahead of Germany, who have won the European Championship three times. Cole Palmer only managed to equalize for England (73rd).

In the quarter-finals, Spain knocked the German national team out of the tournament. The Iberians had advanced to the final as the most convincing team of the tournament.

Spain scores in the second half

After an uneventful first half, Williams gave Spain the lead with their first real chance to score. The assist came from Lamine Yamal. The 17-year-old is the youngest player to ever appear in a European Championship final. Even after taking the lead, Spain created more chances to score.

England, including Bayern striker Harry Kane, who was substituted after an hour, and Champions League winner Jude Bellingham, had little to offer in attack for a long time. The 1:1 was nevertheless achieved through a long-range shot by substitute Palmer. Oyarzabal, who was also substituted, then scored for Spain to make it 2:1.

England waiting for European Championship title

Coach Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions must continue to wait for their first title since 1966. The victory at the World Cup in their own country remains the only triumph of the self-proclaimed motherland of football at a major tournament.
