King Charles: Personal letter to England coach after defeat

It just wasn’t meant to be for England: Once again they failed to win the European Championship, losing the second final in a row. After the 1:2 defeat against Spain, King Charles III found words of comfort.

The English King Charles III has encouraged England’s national coach Gareth Southgate and his team after their 2-1 defeat in the European Championship final against Spain. “Even though victory has eluded you tonight, my wife and I, along with my entire family, would like to urge you and your team to hold your heads high,” reads a letter from the King shared on X.

“Anyone who has ever taken part in sporting activities will know how despairing one can feel after such a result, when the prize was so close – and they will join me in expressing sympathy even as we congratulate Spain.”

Comforting words from King Charles after the European Championship final

It continued: “But please know that your success in reaching the final of the European Championship is a great achievement in itself, bringing with it the pride of a nation that will continue to cheer the Three Lions on today – and in the many triumphs that undoubtedly lie ahead.”

The Spanish royal family congratulated its team on the European Championship title: “EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS!!!! You were the best team, you made every game a pleasure for us, all of Spain is proud of you. Congratulations,” the royal family wrote on X. The post continued: “This result does justice to what we saw on the pitch throughout EURO 2024. Let’s celebrate!”
