“For my friend Peter” is written on the yellow jersey that has a place of honor in the Grassinger Radsport showroom in Lambach. Senior boss Peter Grassinger is proud of the hand-signed present from none other than Miguel Indurain, which he personally presented to him after his last Tour de France victory in 1995. Today, Spain’s unforgettable cycling legend is celebrating his 60th birthday.
What Tadej Pogacar is today in the Tour de France, Indurain was in the 1990s. The absolute superstar who overshadowed everyone else, not only because of his impressive stature with a body weight of 78 kilograms spread over a height of 1.88 meters and concentrated athleticism. In addition to five consecutive triumphs in the Tour de France, which he dominated mainly thanks to his time trial strength, the Basque farmer’s son, who was certified to have a resting heart rate of 28, also won the Giro d’Italia twice, celebrated two world championship titles, became Olympic champion and was also temporarily the holder of the hourly world record. “He was an absolute exception, a force of nature on the bike,” says Grassinger. The fact that “Big Mig” celebrated all his major victories on the Italian luxury bike brand Pinarello was also Grassinger’s luck. He was the traditional manufacturer’s Austrian representative for many years and maintained a close friendship with company founder Giovanni Pinarello. That’s why he met Indurain more often.
