Tour de France: Next Corona case: Belgian Van Gils leaves the Tour

Corona remains a constant topic at the Tour. On Tuesday morning, the next rider did not start the stage because of a positive test.

The 111th Tour de France has recorded its fifth official case of corona. Belgian Maxim Van Gils is leaving the race due to a positive test, his team Lotto-Dstny announced. He showed mild symptoms on the rest day.

The 24-year-old is the fourth professional to give up due to an infection. Before him, the Tour had already ended for the Dane Michael Mørkøv, the Spaniard Juan Ayuso and the Briton Thomas Pidcock. Pidcock’s teammate and former winner Geraint Thomas also tested positive, but decided to stay because of barely noticeable symptoms.

Masks compulsory since Sunday

Corona tests are no longer required by the Tour organization. Sprint star Mark Cavendish, Mørkøv’s teammate, claimed in an interview that he knew of several riders who were still in the race despite being infected with Covid.

The Tour organization ASO had again introduced a mask requirement in certain areas on Sunday. Masks must be worn in the interview zones set up for media representatives at the start and finish, as well as on the buses. The German sprinter Pascal Ackermann showed little understanding for the action, as Corona was already in the peloton and it was now too late.
