The Argentines Sebastian Baez and Francisco Cerúndolo advanced today to the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 Hamburg.
Cerúndolo (4th seed) had a great performance and crushed the German Maximilian Marterer 6-0 and 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals of the German tournament.
“Fran” had a very solid performance to beat the home team, to whom he gave no opportunities at any time and dispatched them in just over an hour of play.
In this way, Cerúndolo was able to leave behind his poor grass-court season, in which he did not win a single tournament in three tournaments, and he reached the quarter-finals of a tournament after two and a half months. The last time he had reached this stage was at the Madrid Masters 1000, at the beginning of May.
Cerúndolo’s rival in the quarterfinals will be the Spaniard Pedro González, who beat the Frenchman Ugo Blanchet in three sets (6-4, 0-6 and 7-5).
The Argentine number 3, who currently occupies the 33rd position in the rankings, is looking for his third ATP title after those achieved in Bastad 2022 and Eastbourne 2023.
The other Argentine who played this Wednesday in Hamburg was Sebastián Báez (3rd seed). He beat Serbian Dusan Lajovic in three sets (4-6, 7-5 and 6-2).
The Buenos Aires native, who with the 19th position in ATP is the best national player in the current ranking, debuted with a victory against the German Dominik Koepfer and now in the quarterfinals he will have to face the Italian-Argentine Luciano Darderi (7th seed).
The player born in Villa Gesell and living in the peninsula has just beaten the naturalized Kazakh Russian Aleksandr Shevchenko.
Báez will be looking for his seventh ATP title and his second ATP 500, after the one he won on February 24 in Rio de Janeiro.
He is also still in the running in the German tournament. Marco Trungellitiwho will play tomorrow in the second round against the Danish Holger Rune (2nd).
Argentines in other tournaments
This week, two tournaments of a lower category than the one in Hamburg are also taking place: the ATP 250 in Bastad and Gstaad.
In Bastad is Thiago Tirantewho will play in the second round against the Russian and top seed, Andrey Rublev, and Mariano Navone (4th), who will have a good opportunity against the Indian Sumit Nagal.
On the other hand, the only Argentine in the race in Gstaad is Thomas Etcheverrywho has already made it to the quarter-finals and is waiting for his next rival, who will be the German Jan-Lennard Struff or the Swiss Leandro Riedi.
