National basketball team: Schröder gets flag-bearer tips from Nowitzki

Dennis Schröder definitely wants to carry the German flag at the Olympic opening ceremony. He already had a former colleague tell him what that feels like.

Flag bearer candidate Dennis Schröder also spoke to basketball superstar Dirk Nowitzki before the Olympic Games in Paris. “He said it was one of the greatest things he’d ever done,” said Schröder at a press conference in Berlin. “Dirk only said positive things. He said: It will change your life.”

Nowitzki, who won the NBA championship with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011, carried the flag for the German team at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. “I’m most looking forward to the opening ceremony,” said Schröder a week before the start of the games in France.

One day later, the German team will play its opening match against Japan in Lille. Nevertheless, the 30-year-old wants to be there for the opening. “You should enjoy it. It’s all very positive,” said Schröder.

Schröder: “It would also be good for my family”

The point guard is one of three German candidates for the role of flag bearer. Whether Schröder, tennis pro Alexander Zverev or sports shooter Christian Reitz will take on the job will be announced next Thursday. “That would be a great sign,” said Schröder about a possible election: “It would also be good for my family and generally for everyone who has parents of foreign origin. It is possible for us to achieve a lot, too.”

On Friday (8 p.m./MagentaSport), the German national team will play a friendly against Japan in Berlin. The women will also play an international match against Nigeria beforehand.
