Ralf Schumacher is receiving a lot of support from Formula 1 after he made his homosexuality public in an Instagram post. “Total support from me and I’m sure from the entire Formula 1 community,” said two-time world champion Fernando Alonso from Spain in a press conference for the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring. “It’s great that he’s feeling good and we’re happy for him,” said the 42-year-old driver of the British Aston Martin team.
Formula 1 as a safe environment
Alonso also knows the 49-year-old Ralf Schumacher as a rival on the race track. He celebrated his greatest successes in the premier class of motorsport with the world championship titles in 2005 and 2006, when Ralf Schumacher himself started in Formula 1.
The brother of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher ended his career in 2007 after a total of 180 Grand Prix starts and six race victories.
“It’s great,” said Oscar Piastri, praising Ralf Schumacher’s move to go public. “We want our sport to be inclusive and for people to feel safe to come out,” added the 23-year-old Australian from McLaren.

Ralf Schumacher and his partner Étienne were already delighted by the many other positive reactions. “Ralf & Étienne are overwhelmed by the many great responses from all over the world, nobody really expected this,” a family spokesman explained.
Compatriot Nico Hülkenberg criticized negative comments in Budapest: “There is always hate in the world and especially online, where people remain virtually anonymous. That’s not great.”
Ralf Schumacher will once again be working as an expert for the pay-TV channel Sky at the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend.
