Golf: British Open start: debacle for golf stars Woods and McIlroy

The performance of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy at the British Open moves golf fans. The superstars’ start was a complete failure. A debutant took the lead.

Golf superstar Tiger Woods and world number two Rory McIlroy experienced a disaster at the start of the 152nd British Open. Woods, now 48, needed 79 strokes for the opening round on the par-71 course at the Royal Troon Golf Club and was only in joint 138th place after the first day. The 35-year-old Northern Irishman McIlroy also had to improve after a weak round of 78 and 129th place on the second day in order to qualify for the two decisive rounds at the weekend.

The leader is Daniel Brown. The 29-year-old Englishman only needed 65 strokes on the west coast of Scotland in his British Open debut. The world number one, Scottie Scheffler from the USA, is waiting in the wings with 70 strokes and position eleven.

No German player in the top 30

Veteran Marcel Siem (44) from Ratingen and the reigning British Open seniors winner, Alex Cejka (53), are in 42nd place with 73 strokes each. Stephan Jäger from Munich needed one more stroke to reach 69th place. 30-year-old Yannik Paul from Mannheim got off to a bad start with 77 strokes and 120th place.

McIlroy started the British Open with high ambitions. He won his last of four major titles in 2014 at the British Open in Liverpool. “It’s one of those days where I just didn’t adapt well enough to the conditions,” he said after his frustrating performance. The Northern Irishman started his round early in the morning in heavy rain and wind. The 15-time major champion Woods had slightly better conditions in the afternoon, but was unable to use them to his advantage.
