Major tournament: Frustration at the British Open: Woods ends golf season

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy failed miserably at the British Open. For one of the two golf stars, the season is over. Two Germans, on the other hand, feel very comfortable on the Scottish coast.

Golf superstar Tiger Woods experienced a sporting debacle at the 152nd British Open on the west coast of Scotland and is drawing conclusions. After his early exit from the major tournament in Troon, the now 48-year-old Californian declared his season over. With daily scores of 79 and 77 strokes on the demanding par-71 course at the Royal Troon Golf Club, the 15-time major winner clearly missed the cut. Woods needed 21 strokes more in the two rounds than the Irishman Shane Lowry (135 strokes), who was leading at half-time.

“That wasn’t very good,” said Woods. “I fought it all day.” The long-time world number one does not want to play any more tournaments until December. After his numerous operations and the serious car accident in February 2021, in which he broke his right leg several times, Woods only competes in a few select tournaments.

McIlroy disappointed, two Germans happy

World number two Rory McIlroy’s dream of a fifth major title also ended prematurely. The 35-year-old Northern Irishman needed 75 strokes today after a weak round of 78 on the first day and also clearly missed the two decisive rounds at the weekend.

Marcel Siem and Alex Cejka from Ratingen, however, are taking part this weekend. The 44-year-old Siem improved to joint 18th place thanks to a round of 71 and a total of 144 strokes. The 53-year-old Cejka, who is allowed to play in the tournament as the reigning British Open seniors winner, is in 54th place after two days with 147 strokes. Yannik Paul from Mannheim and Stephan Jäger from Munich failed to make the cut.
