Alexander Zverev is once again in the final of his home tournament. The Hamburg tennis pro also impressed in the semifinals. In the final, he will face an opponent he already knows from last year.
Tennis professional Alexander Zverev has once again reached the final of the ATP500 tournament in Hamburg. As in the quarter-final against the Chinese Zhang Zhizhen, the Olympic champion and last year’s winner also impressed against the Spaniard Pedro Martinez, winning 6:2, 6:4 after 1:24 hours. The almost 10,000 spectators in the stadium at Rothenbaum celebrated the Hamburg native after his second match point.
In the final on Sunday (3 p.m./Sky) he will face the Frenchman Arthur Fils. The 20-year-old had previously defeated the Argentinian Sebastián Báez just as clearly by 6:2, 6:2. Last year, Fils was defeated in the semifinals by eventual tournament winner Zverev.
Alexander Zverev strong in the first set
The fourth-ranked player in the world was very dominant against Martinez, just as he was against the Chinese the day before. The fact that the 27-year-old has problems with his left knee was clear during the breaks. He spent them standing up, as he had done on previous days.
In the match itself, Zverev was not hindered at all. Once again, his serve was his best tool. This time he hit 13 aces in total. After breaks to 2:1 and 5:2, he won the first set comfortably 6:2.
In the second set, he broke his opponent’s serve in the first game. But Martinez got better, Zverev made a few unnecessary mistakes and missed further break chances. But that couldn’t stop him.
