At the end of the year, professional cyclist Simon Geschke will be retiring. He will be taking part in the Tour de France for the last time. After his career, the next big challenge awaits him.
After his career as a professional cyclist, Simon Geschke is now facing the next challenge. The 38-year-old’s wife is expecting a child in November. “It’s very good timing because I don’t have to train in the winter. That will be the next big challenge for me. I’m really looking forward to it,” the 2015 Tour de France stage winner told the German Press Agency.
Geschke is also happy that his career is coming to an end at the end of the year because of his upcoming offspring. The 111th Tour, which ends on Sunday in Nice with an individual time trial, is also the last for the Freiburger. “The Tour was even harder than the Giro. You count the days until you are back home,” said Geschke.
He delivered a strong performance at the Giro d’Italia in May. He finished 14th in the overall rankings at the Tour of Italy. “I enjoyed the Giro more from a sporting perspective,” said the Berlin native. Nevertheless, he was happy to be taking part in the Tour for the twelfth time. “It was nice to be here again. Especially because I didn’t finish the Tour last year due to illness.”
In 2023, the mountain-experienced racing driver struggled to the Courchevel airfield on the 17th stage, totally exhausted. One day later, the ailing Geschke had to give up.
At this year’s Tour, he was no longer able to make a big impression. Things looked different in 2022, when he had worn the mountain jersey for a long time. Or in 2015. Back then, Geschke celebrated his only Tour day victory to date after his 49-kilometer solo ride to the Pra Loup ski area. “Nine years ago, I felt better than I do now in the third week,” Geschke said recently with a grin.
For him, the most important thing this year was to get through the three weeks without any accidents. And to arrive in Nice. “There were a lot of drivers who went home because they were sick. I’m glad I got through it.”
