Summer Games in Germany?: Federal Cabinet plans declaration of intent for Olympic bid

The efforts of Germany’s top sports leaders to host the Olympic Games are gaining momentum. The traffic light government wants to support a new attempt.

Shortly before the start of the Summer Games in Paris, the German government is getting serious about a new German Olympic bid. The federal cabinet wants to adopt a declaration of intent on Wednesday, according to government sources. The aim is probably to bid for the 2040 Summer Games. ZDF had previously reported on the government’s plans. A German bid for 2036, exactly 100 years after the Nazi Games in Berlin, had been controversially discussed.

In the federal budget, the traffic light government has already earmarked funding of 2.2 million euros for the possible process of a German bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2025. The German Olympic Sports Confederation had already made a decision in principle for another bid last December.

DOSB boss: Concrete plans for next year

On December 7, the DOSB plans to decide on further steps at its general meeting in Saarbrücken. “We will certainly explain in the first half of 2025 who is the applicant, what we are doing and how we are going to proceed,” said DOSB President Thomas Weikert in the ZDF “Sportstudio”.

The umbrella organization’s goal so far has been to apply for the 2036 or 2040 Summer Games. Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich and the Rhine-Ruhr region have expressed their interest in applying with letters of intent. The past Olympic campaigns in Germany, however, failed due to resistance and the vote of the population in Munich and Hamburg.

After the games in Paris, which open on Friday, Los Angeles will be the next summer host in 2028. The Olympics for 2032 have been awarded to Brisbane, Australia.
