Lothar Matthäus criticizes Hoeneß: “Causes unrest” at Bayern Munich

Lothar Matthäus and Uli Hoeneß have not always been on the same wavelength in the past. Now the record international player is criticising his former boss for his recent comments.

The German national soccer player Lothar Matthäus has criticized Bayern Munich’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß for his recent comments on transfer policy. “Uli may be the club’s doer, but he is no longer the boss. We can no longer change Uli and he has every right to speak out, but he often causes unrest by doing so,” complained Matthäus in his “Sky” column.

The background to this is Hoeneß’ comments at the weekend about possible transfers for the Munich team. According to the announcement by long-time Bayern manager Hoeneß, new stars will only come if one or two prominent players leave. “FC Bayern has no money-wasters,” said Hoeneß, which Matthäus noted “with a grin.”

Hoeneß: Bayern has “no money-wasters”

“Uli has shaped FC Bayern for almost five decades. He has the right to speak his mind, but why always to the outside world?” asked the 1990 world champion. The statement that players must first be sold in order to make further transfers is completely normal and understandable, but Hoeneß does not have to emphasize this publicly, said Matthäus. Sports director Max Eberl and sports director Christoph Freund are the decision-makers in terms of their positions, but these statements show where the top decision-maker still sits.

Hoeneß let Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidžić do their thing. Now he doesn’t want anything to go wrong again. “Hoeneß’s worries and fears are becoming apparent,” writes Matthäus. Unlike in the past, the decisions have not worked out recently. That is why Hoeneß is also under enormous pressure.

Too many expensive players in the Bayern squad

FC Bayern has announced the signing of three new players ahead of the new season: defender Hiroki Ito (VfB Stuttgart), midfielder Palhinha (FC Fulham) and winger Michael Olise (Crystal Palace). According to Hoeneß, the trio will cost “a total of 125 million euros”. On the other hand, there are expensive high earners in the squad such as Leon Goretzka, Kingsley Coman, Matthijs de Ligt, Serge Gnabry and Joshua Kimmich, about whose continued stay at the Munich club has been the subject of repeated speculation.
