Medals in sight: German Olympic team aims for top ten in Paris

Germany’s Olympic athletes will face tough competition in France. At the end of the games, they hope to be among at least the top ten nations in the world.

The German Olympic team would like to be among the top ten in the medal table again at the Games in Paris. “We will have to work very hard to achieve this, because a whole series of other countries around us want the same thing,” said Olaf Tabor, the team’s Chef de Mission, at the opening press conference in the German House. “We will definitely not be given anything for free on this path.”

In 2021 in Tokyo, a total of 37 medals, ten of which were gold, were enough to secure ninth place in the national rankings. It was the worst German result since reunification.

Before the opening ceremony in the French capital on Friday, Tabor stressed: “There is not just one goal. That is because we have very different ambitions with 428 athletes in 40 sports.” It is also important that the games run safely until August 11 and that you can see “the smiles on the faces” of the athletes at the closing ceremony. “It is difficult to say that there is a yardstick by which we measure the team. We came here to achieve something,” said Tabor.

428 German athletes will compete in Paris, 211 women and 217 men. For 256 of them, it is an Olympic first. In addition to the riders and canoeists, the biggest hopes for gold are long jumper Malaika Mihambo, decathlete Leo Neugebauer and swimmer Florian Wellbrock.
