The Formula 1 teams in the lower ranks wanted a new points distribution. This was discussed – and then rejected.
A new points system in Formula 1 is off the table for now. As the International Automobile Federation Fia announced after a meeting of the Formula 1 Commission in London, it was “unanimously decided” that there would be no changes.
Currently, a Grand Prix winner receives 25 points, second place 18, and third place 15. The points continue at 12, 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2, plus one for tenth place. One proposal was to keep the points the same up to seventh place, after which 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 points should be awarded. However, at the meeting in the presence of Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, no changes to the points system were made.
According to the specialist portal “motorsport.com”, the racing teams in the lower ranks were particularly interested in a broader distribution of points, which could have brought them higher sums when it came to the distribution of prize money.
Test days in 2026 will be significantly increased
There will be a major change in 2026, however, when new regulations come into force. Instead of three days as previously, racing teams will be allowed to test on nine days, spread over three stages, before the start of the season.
Formula 1 will experience a rule revolution for the 2026 season. The electric share of hybrid drives will then rise to up to 50 percent, and the combustion engines will have to run entirely on “sustainable fuel,” as it is called. The cars will also be lighter, with the minimum weight falling from 798 to 768 kilograms. According to the rule keepers, downforce will be reduced by 30 percent and air resistance by 55 percent.
