Paris 2024 Olympics organisers investigate invasion and scandal in Morocco-Argentina

The organizers of the Paris Olympics 2024 are investigating what led to a pitch invasion during the opening match of the men’s Olympic football tournament between Argentina and Morocco.

Argentina lost 2-1 after a review of the VAR after the game was suspended with the score tied at 2-2, but the final result was not confirmed until two hours later when the match resumed.

“The football match between Argentina and Morocco at the Saint-Étienne stadium was suspended due to the invasion of the pitch by a small number of spectators,” said the organizers of the Games. “The match resumed and was able to conclude without incident. Paris 2024 is working with stakeholders to understand the causes and identify appropriate actions.”

The Argentinian Christian Medina scored in added time to salvage what looked like a 2-2 draw, but the decision was disallowed for offside after a review by the VAR It occurred about two hours after the game was suspended.

When order was restored and the teams left the pitch following the invasion in which security personnel chased several fans onto the pitch, it became clear that the match had not been completed but rather abandoned.

The teams reappeared to finish the match in an empty stadium, playing for three minutes and 15 seconds after the VAR completed its review and disallowed the goal, in a turbulent start to the competition.

“There was a small intrusion that should not have happened, but it was peaceful. The organizing committee and FIFA have reached an agreement and everything will return to normal.”said the French Minister of Sports, Amélie Oudéa-Castera.

“There’s a game next week in Saint-Étienne and everything will go well, I promise.”hill
