The Argentine team is outraged after the start of the Olympic football tournament. Now FIFA also wants to clarify the matter.
FIFA, the world football association, has become involved in the investigations following the chaos at the start of the Olympic tournament between Argentina and Morocco. FIFA announced that an integrity expert would assist in the investigation. The investigations concerned possible violations of the world association’s regulations. The Olympic organizers had previously announced that they would review the events.
After Moroccan fans stormed the pitch, the match at the start of the Olympic tournament on Wednesday was interrupted for a long time shortly before the end, then the Argentinians’ equaliser to make it 2:2 was disallowed. The Argentinians had called on the disciplinary committee of the world association to take action because of the incidents. It was a “serious incident”.
For a long time there was uncertainty
The match against Morocco in Saint-Étienne ended chaotically. Argentina had scored what appeared to be a 2-2 equaliser in the 16th minute of stoppage time. The game could not continue because Moroccan fans stormed the pitch in outrage at the length of stoppage time. For a long time it was unclear whether the match had finished or had just been interrupted. In addition, the goal that made it 2-2 was checked for a possible offside position using video evidence.
After almost two hours, the teams returned to the pitch, referee Glenn Nyberg overturned the 2-2 score after viewing the video images and allowed the remaining three minutes to be played. The Moroccans then won 2-1.
