A new engine earns Max Verstappen a grid penalty in Belgium. The Formula 1 world champion still sets the pace at the start in Spa.
Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has set the first best time in training for the Belgian Grand Prix. The Red Bull world championship leader set the fastest lap on the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in 1:43.372 minutes.
Since there are many overtaking opportunities on the Ardennes circuit, Verstappen has had a new engine installed in his company car. However, the Belgian-born Dutchman has exceeded the permitted limit of engines, which is why he will be penalized ten places on the starting grid for the last Grand Prix before the summer break on Sunday.
In the first free practice session, Verstappen relegated McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, who won his first Formula 1 race in Hungary a week ago, to second place with a lead of 0.531 seconds. Williams driver Alex Albon surprisingly came third (+0.727 seconds). Nico Hülkenberg (+2.273 seconds) had to settle for 17th place in the Haas.
