Formula 1 in Belgium: Verstappen pursuer Norris fastest of the day in Spa

In Belgium, the McLaren duo Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are leading the way in training. A new engine earns Max Verstappen a grid penalty.

Max Verstappen’s World Championship rival Lando Norris secured the best time of the day at the Belgian Grand Prix. The English McLaren driver set the fastest lap of the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in the second free practice session in 1:42.260 minutes, relegating his teammate Oscar Piastri (+0.215 seconds) to second place. The three-time world champion and World Championship leader Verstappen (+0.217 seconds) finished third after setting the best time in the opening practice session. The only German regular driver, Haas veteran Nico Hülkenberg (+1.586 seconds), finished the day in 16th place.

Verstappen, who leads the World Championship ahead of Norris, is going into the last race before the summer break with a handicap. The Red Bull driver has had a new engine installed in his company car. However, the Belgian-born Dutchman has exceeded the permitted limit of engines, which is why he will be penalized ten places on the starting grid on Sunday.
