The Ski World Cup is not getting off to a good start in the new year. For example, yesterday the men’s slalom in Zagreb was interrupted several times due to an enormously damaged slope, before it was finally canceled after 19 athletes had started.
Even before that, there was another bad news. Due to a recommendation by the State of Salzburg, the women’s World Cup slalom will not take place in Flachau on January 11th. Because of the high corona incidence numbers, the government had spoken out against the event. When looking for a replacement location, the ÖSV quickly found what it was looking for. Schladming steps in, and for the first time since the 2013 World Cup, the women are allowed to tackle the demanding Planai in racing mode and under floodlights. The start times are 6:00 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.
ÖSV President Roswitha Stadlober emphasized that all other competitions planned for the coming week, such as the Ski World Cup in Zauchensee and the Snowboard World Cup in Bad Gastein, will take place as planned.

In Zagreb, the coronavirus wasn’t the stumbling block, but the holey slope. The conditions were far from fair – they were dangerous in the end. Holes had to be shoveled up again and again. The route was treated several times with water and salt. The organizers fought for the race, which should actually have taken place on Wednesday – in the end in vain. Sebastian Foss-Solevaag (Nor), who started the race with starting number one, was in the lead.
Now things should go on in Adelboden. A giant slalom and slalom are on the program at the weekend. Gate runs then follow on a weekly basis in Wengen (January 16) and in Kitzbühel (23), before the classic in Schladming ends the slalom month of January on the 25th.
