The best Olympic preview: Cerúndolo was crowned in Umag just hours before travelling to Paris

Francisco Cerúndolowho is preparing to represent Argentina in the Olympic Games of Paris 2024defeated Italian Lorenzo Musetti today in an exciting final with a score of 2-6, 6-4 and 7-6 (5) in the ATP 250 of Umagin Croatia.

This triumph marks his first title of 2024 and the third of his career, adding to his victories at Bastad 2022 and Eastbourne 2023.

Cerúndolo, currently number 28 in the world, faced Italian Lorenzo Musetti (17th) in the final of the ATP 250 in Umag, a tournament that in the past was won by Guillermo Cañas and Guillermo Coria and that had several national finalists.

This duel represented the third meeting between the two, with Musetti leading the previous encounters.

In the final, Cerúndolo showed a high level of play, coming back from a negative first set to take the victory and the title.

Cerúndolo expressed his happiness and determination: “I’m going to sleep for two or three hours because I have to take a flight to leave everything for our country.”

The Argentine, a pupil of Kevin Konfederak, had a remarkable run in the tournament, eliminating rivals of the caliber of the Croatian Matej Dodig (310th), the Italian Lorenzo Sonego (54th) and the Russian Andrey Rublev (9th).

For his part, Musetti reached the final after beating the Argentine Marco Trungelliti (136th), the Serbian Dusan Lajovic (53rd) and the Czech Jakub Mensik (81st).

With this victory, the eldest of the Cerúndolo brothers has won his third professional title and the first of the season. This achievement comes just before his participation in the Olympic Games, where he hopes to continue his good performance.

After the final in Umag, the Buenos Aires native will travel to Paris to play his first Olympic match, seeking to win a medal for Argentina, against Chilean Tomás Barrios Vera.

This year has not been easy for Cerúndolo, who was once world number 19. However, his performance in Umag was a sign of his potential and his ability to compete at the highest level.
