Olympic exit for DHB professional: Handball player Dahmke nominated for injured Hornke

Olympic handball player Tim Hornke injured his foot during the victory against Sweden. A left winger replaced the right winger. A position-specific substitution was not possible.

Tim Hornke sustained a foot injury in the German handball team’s opening victory against Sweden and will be out for the rest of the Olympic tournament. Left winger Rune Dahmke will replace the right winger from SC Magdeburg in the German squad of 14. A position-specific substitution is not possible, as in the event of an injury-related absence, only one of the three previously designated reserve players can be nominated. Hornke sustained the injury right at the start of the match.

National coach Alfred Gislason spoke of bitter news for the German Olympic squad. “Last night, in all the euphoria, I forgot a little that we can only nominate those who are here – and there is no right winger among them, but a left winger and a pivot. And that will force us to tinker around a bit in the next few days. That means you have to have very creative ideas,” said the Icelander.

The DHB selection’s next opponent is Japan on Monday. The other rivals in Group A are Croatia, Spain and Slovenia. The four best teams in each group of six qualify for the quarter-finals.
